Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
