Dallas Cowboys Owner Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Fans
The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Previous examples involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
